true smiles

Hi,

Just sharing these photos today as they give me a bit of a smile, which is very needed at the moment with the bit of a battle that is going on for me right now.

They were was taken in street and on the riverbank at Bodhgaya one morning when I managed to wander away from the touristy and pilgrim area around the famous bodhi tree where Buddha became enlightened.  I walked through the great local markets and down some back streets to see a pair of girls running happily along and eventually found a whole bunch of kids sitting on the river bank.

It was a great contrast to see the kids here just being kids, playing and enjoying life.  While a couple of hundred metres away in the tourist areas kids of the same age were working as professional beggars to support their families.  With this responsibility of earning came a loss of innocence and joy in their eyes which was hard to comprehend.

Getting down to the markets and a great spot on the river and be free of the exploitative vibe of the popular areas brought a lot of peace and joy.  It got me away from the chasm between beggar and tourist where i felt completely uncomfortable as a ridiculously rich westerner and purely a source of money for survival.

While down on this river bank I felt a part of  a compassionate humanity and envious of the joy these kids showed in a place of extreme poverty when we struggle in the west, surrounded by material goods that we are told are a necessity for a happy life.

So before I get too deep with all this. I will leave it at that for today.  If I have time i will do a bit of a post tomorrow on another part of town I loved.

in the spirit of letour

Photo from Winow of the World, Shenzen, China

As a tribute to the Tour de France just a quick post of the good old Eiffel Tower, well sort of. The replica one at Window of the World that dominates the skyline of this area of  Shenzen in China, truly the most bizarre place I have been to in my life.

That’s all for today. Now time to take my bike out for a ride. (big thanks to Nic and Graham dropping it off to me this morning)

trying to get this moving

hi y’all

been sitting here for a couple of nights with a certain wordpress book trying to get this website moving ahead. So I figure I should at least write something while doing it.

First thing is, the book is too basic. Even though I had only spent a few hours on wordpress previously, I got halfway through the book before I discovered anything new. So if you have any sort of web experience at all I would avoid any books other than advanced stuff. However it is forcing me to systematically go through all the features of this setup which can only be a good thing.  Hopefully then I can get this wordpress site looking the way I am envisioning my website to end up.

Anyway, thats about all I have to add at the moment as I am currently holed up away from all my photography gear and files so cannot really talk much about photos and my work.  Hopefully will be back into action soon.

So just to finish with some sort of photographic effort I will throw in this photo taken on one of my recent overseas work trips. One I shot at a great dance spectacular I got to see in china this year.  I had spent the day at a really strange theme park as a guest of my hosting company.  The place was Window of the World, a massive place full of replicas of all the major landmarks around the world.  The centerpiece of the weirdness was a 100m high Eiffel tower.

I will post a series on the place, but for the moment the image below is from the stage show that is held there each night.  Although the dance show still did have some very strange moments  (picture trapeze combined with dancers on rollerblades) it was actually an extremely professional and brilliant production.  Hope you enjoy (the image will link to my flickr where you can see a few more of the show and some that I have already put up in my recent photostream)

India in one image?

Hi,

a first quick blog post to get things going here with a photo from Bodhgaya Markets in India.

For me the image summed up the crazy-ness and ultimate contrasts of this country.

Unfortunately it is late at night so this is way to short to be a reasonable post but I did want to get things started with my brand new site and was really keen to share this image.  There will be a whole gallery from the markets posted once they are organised.

Hope you enjoy.
